WWOOFER FAQ

just the facts about wwoofing on our farm

An abbreviated version of the information on our Wwoofer Page

When do you accept volunteers?     May - October

Where will we stay?

We have a small camper - trailer for 1 or 2 and a canvas platform tent for 1 or 2. Some wwoofers prefer to camp in their own tents.  Hoping to build another structure this summer.  You have your own bathroom in the house with full bath and shower.  Towels provided.

What will we do?

We work in the field every day;  planting, weeding, harvesting, prepping vegs for market/CSA. Volunteers also choose a project to work on during their stay here.  Wwoofers may propose projects! We require 6 hours of work per day, 5 days per week.

What will we eat?

We provide food and meals for you 7 days per week. Expect to cook your own meals on your days off.  We are lacto vegetarian, but do not object to eggs, milk, meat. (We do object to commercial, corporate breakfast cereals and request that you do not buy any Cocoa Krispies, Lucky Charms, Sugar Pops, or the like while staying here.....omg...)

What can I do on my days off?

There are river/lake  swimming opportunites nearby, including our wading creek. We love a  certain shady spot on the Allegheny River  20 minutes away. The Big City is 1hr 15 minutes away, with all things cultural. There is good hiking, a bike trail, and kayaks/canoes/sailboats for rent at a nearby large state park.  Many  biking and hiking trails within 1/2 hour. Lake Erie beaches are 1 hour 15 minutes north. Climbing at McConnell's Mill and at the SRU wall.  Microbrewery in town.  Music festivals within striking distance.

What do I need to bring?

This is the most common question.

The essentials:  Clothing for heat, humidity, rain, swimming, sweaty work, cool evenings. Raingear.  Sturdy shoes for the field, they will get muddy. Some kind of waterproof footwear for early morning work when the grass is very wet. Sandals.  Hats! they will get sweaty and dirty too.  Insect repellent and sunscreen.  Work gloves are a must.  A water bottle. Your pillows. A bicycle (if you can)

The non-essentials:  Books,  instruments, portable electronics.  We have an extensive library, a computer with satellite connection, but  no wi-fi  (are you serious? wi-fi out here? HA). We have a piano, drums, a huge CD collection, and fun board games to play after dinner.  Yes, we have a TV.  We personally do not have time to watch TV during the summer, but you can stare at it if you wish. A bicycle-  we generally bike to and from the field. We do have some spares, but bring your own if you can.

You may bring a sleeping bag and blankets, but if you are travelling light we can provide sheets and  blankets. The platform tent has a double air mattress on a futon frame with sheets and blankets. The camper has a built in double bed and decent closet with shelves, plus sofa.
