Spring at Silver Wheel (2010 photos)
We spent the first day of Spring tilling, weeding, and planting. (yes, planting!) It was a classic early spring day; warm and windy. Some of the planting beds were dry enough to work, so Ben got out the trusty BCS walk-behind tractor/tiller, and worked up a few beds for peas, onions, and early lettuce. Lori used the Earthway seeder to quickly put in a long double row of "Oregon Giant" snow peas, after dusting the furrows with wood ashes.

Onion sets are also going in this weekend. The garlic is up, as are the perennial "Walking Onions" (also called 'topsetting' onions). Ben took our shiny new tractor out for a spin, he cleaned up the orchard field.

Meanwhile, the high tunnels continue to pump out greens; kale, tatsoi, arugula, baby lettuces, mustard and senposai.

The most exciting news: the first pea shoots emerged in the high tunnel! An experimental row of "Sugar Sprint" snap peas were planted on March 7th. The first one poked up on March 18th.
